Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde

As a traveling charity worker flitting from 3rd world to first and back again I see much that goes unseen by ordinary travelers. I see the gross expectations of the west matched to the expectant aspirations of the eastern and southern developing nations.

In sub-saharan Africa there is much to celebrate and there is much to learn as the people aspire to western ideals. Art is one of those vehicles that enhances growth and understanding in the emerging cultures.

The image of self, celebrated in the west but feared in the east and south tells us much about the parent cultures. Like democracy in the developing world, Art is mostly only paid lip service. What we must do in the west is to encourage growth in both. This ‘Image of Self’ is only a start.
